GCSE TUTORING · LEEDS
GCSE Science is where a lot of capable Leeds students lose marks they have done the work for, knowing the content but dropping the six-mark explanations and the required practicals. Our Leeds GCSE Science tutors work on the application and exam technique that revision alone leaves untouched.
WHO WE ARE
The Degree Gap is a UK-based company that knows education inside out. Outside of tutoring, we run webinars for thousands of parents, speak at schools about GCSE and A-Level preparation, and have spent years listening to the same worries you're probably about to bring to us. We find you tutors with the grades but also the compassion and ability to listen to your child's worries.
That is what got us voted GCSE Tutoring Specialists of the Year at the 2026 Prestige Awards and why we have over 100 5 star reviews.

GCSE Science in Leeds usually comes down to application, not revision. Students know the content and lose the marks elsewhere: the six and nine-mark long-answer questions that want a structured explanation, the required practicals examiners keep returning to, the maths inside Physics where a rearranged equation or a unit conversion catches a strong student out, and the Chemistry calculations that unravel against the clock. With no grammar schools filtering the intake, the range in any Leeds classroom is wide, from students securing a grade 4 or 5 in Combined Science to those chasing the 6s and 7s that Triple and a Science A-Level need.
The tutor starts by marking a recent paper across all three sciences to see whether the marks are going on recall, on long-answer structure, or on the maths. From there it is specialist work, a Biology, Chemistry or Physics tutor for whichever subject leaks most, drilling the practicals and extended answers until they hold. For a Science A-Level place at Notre Dame or Elliott Hudson, or a route towards a science or engineering degree that Leeds's professional families often have in mind, that focused work is what turns a pass into a place.
Schools we can help support students from: Roundhay School, Allerton High School, Lawnswood School, Temple Moor High School, Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School and Cockburn School.
USUALLY MATCHED WITHIN 24 HOURS
Most Leeds families are matched within 24 hours, and for Science we can match a single-subject specialist where one subject is the problem.
Tell us if it is Combined or Triple Science, which of Biology, Chemistry or Physics is the worry, the year group and school, the exam board, and the grade you are aiming at.
Within 24 hours we send two or three vetted Science tutors. When one subject is the weak spot, we match a specialist for it rather than a generalist across all three. Free 15-minute video meeting before any lesson.
Weekly one-to-one on Lessonspace, our shared whiteboard, working practicals and six-mark answers step by step. A second hour before mocks is common. From £37/hr, cancel any time.

For most Leeds students the marks that decide the grade sit in the same places: the six and nine-mark long-answer questions that want a structured explanation, the required practicals and the way examiners test them, and the maths inside Physics, unit conversions and rearranged equations. Chemistry calculations under time come a close fourth. None of it is a revision problem exactly. A tutor marks a recent paper to see which is costing the most and drills that block first.
Higher tier reaches the top grades but floors around a 4; foundation caps near a 5. In Combined Science the tier is set per subject, so a Leeds student can sit higher in one science and foundation in another. At a borderline 4 or 5 in Year 10 mocks, higher is usually right but needs targeted work on the six-mark questions and the maths. The confident call comes from a Year 10 diagnostic, and we will tell you plainly which tier fits.
Most sessions run 60 minutes in three parts. The first fifteen review the week's homework and surface the misconceptions the marking turned up. The middle thirty drill the topic bleeding the most marks, often a required practical or a six-mark explanation, with the method broken down step by step. The last fifteen put it into exam-paper practice with a mark-scheme walkthrough, so the student sees exactly how the marks are awarded.
Yes, and we ask about learning differences when we match, so the tutor is chosen with that in mind. Many tutors work regularly with neurodivergent students, and Lessonspace's shared whiteboard suits Science well: diagrams built in stages, explanations chunked, practicals scaffolded visually rather than delivered as a block of text. Tell us on the consultation call and we match accordingly.
Usually within a few days. After a free 15-minute consultation we send two or three tutor profiles inside 24 hours, you meet your chosen tutor on a free call, and the first paid session is typically within the week. Most Leeds families are matched within 24 hours of that first call, which matters most in the run-up to mocks when a specialist's time fills up.
