Because Leeds runs entirely on comprehensives, a GCSE Maths grade is doing real work: it is what opens Notre Dame, Elliott Hudson or a strong school sixth form, and later a Russell Group route. The marks tend to leak in a few reliable places. The algebra rearrangement inside a multi-mark question. The geometry and ratio through the middle of the paper. The multi-step problem-solving at the back. And underneath, an earlier method, fractions or negatives from Year 8, that never fully set and now undermines the harder topics stacked on it. The first lesson works through a recent paper and marks it the way the board does, sorting the losses into technique or foundation. From session two the plan targets whichever it is, rebuilding the earlier method for a student closing a gap, or drilling the top-band questions for one pushing higher. Notre Dame Sixth Form College publishes entry requirements at grade 5 and 6 across relevant subjects, and for A-Level Maths that usually means a 6 or 7. That is the gap a term of focused Maths work is built to close.

Notre Dame Sixth Form College and Elliott Hudson College set their own subject requirements, and for A-Level Maths that usually means at least a grade 6, often a 7, with Further Maths asking higher. School sixth forms like Roundhay and Allerton Grange publish their own thresholds. From a current 5 or 6, that gap is typically a 12 to 16 week piece of work: the algebra and problem-solving question styles first, then the top-band stretch. We confirm the exact target on the first call.
Look past the total to the question numbers on a recent mock. Higher papers run from number and basic algebra, through ratio and geometry, to the problem-solving and circle-theorem questions at the end. Marks lost mainly in that last third point to exam technique. Marks missing from early on point to a foundation gap from an earlier year. A Leeds tutor reads that pattern in the first session and starts with whichever is costing more.

The non-calculator paper rewards arithmetic fluency and clean algebra; the two calculator papers reward accurate, multi-step problem-solving.
