GCSE Maths in Birmingham has a wide spread behind it. A student sitting the King Edward VI entrance and one at a large city comprehensive can be on the same paper with very different foundations underneath. Wherever a student sits, the marks tend to leak in the same spots: the algebra rearrangement inside a multi-mark question, the geometry and ratio in the middle of the paper, the multi-step problem-solving at the back, and, for many, an earlier method, fractions, negatives, or proportion, that never set and now blocks the harder work. The grade is rarely capped by effort. It is one or two foundations and a handful of question styles.
The first lesson marks a recent paper and traces each lost mark back to where the method actually broke, which is often two or three years earlier than the topic on screen. From session two the plan rebuilds from that root and layers the exam technique on top. For the grade 6 or 7 that a King Edward VI sixth form or a competitive route at Joseph Chamberlain or Cadbury College asks for in Maths and the Sciences, or the grade 5 an FE course or an HSBC apprenticeship screens on, that rebuilt foundation is what moves the grade.

Birmingham sits close to the England average for GCSE Maths, but the citywide figure hides a wide spread. The King Edward VI consortium and the selective schools pull one way; some large comprehensives sit below the national picture. What that means for a tutor is simple: the plan has to start from where a particular student actually is, whether that is stretching a secure 6 towards an 8 or rebuilding a grade 4 into a confident 5, rather than from a one-size syllabus.
Both matter, because they carry equal weight. The non-calculator paper is where arithmetic fluency and clean algebra show up; the two calculator papers reward accurate, multi-step problem-solving. In Birmingham the students we see most often lose the calculator marks at the back of Paper 3, where the questions get wordy. The first-session diagnostic marks one of each to find the weaker paper, and the early lessons start there.
The clearest signal is the pattern of question numbers on a recent mock. Higher Maths papers build from number and basic algebra, through ratio and geometry, to the problem-solving and circle-theorem questions at the end. If your child is scoring well early and dropping the last third, the gap is exam technique. If the marks go missing from the start, it is more likely a foundation from an earlier year, and the tutor rebuilds that first.
