Reading Coaches Who Help Your Child Read With Confidence Again

Maybe the reading-age letter came home. Maybe books just quietly disappeared from the evening. Either way, you can see that reading has become the hard part of the day.

From enquiry to first session

From your first message to your child's first reading session

1

A 40-minute consultation with Joe

When you get in touch, Joe calls you back to find a time that suits you. The consultation is a proper conversation about your child's reading, the reading age if you have it, the words or sounds they get stuck on, and how they feel about opening a book at all. From there he starts thinking about which coaches would fit.

2

Free trial calls with two or three coach matches

Joe sends a short list of two or three coaches he thinks could work for your child, and each one offers a free trial call. You get to meet them, watch how they are with your child, and see who your child actually warms to. No commitment after, no card details, no pressure.

3

You pick the coach that fits, and sessions begin

From the trial calls you choose the coach who feels right, and weekly sessions begin on Lessonspace, our shared online whiteboard. You pay per session. No contracts. If it stops working at any point, you stop.

01

We have met every reading coach we put in front of you

The hardest part of finding help is usually the not knowing, a name off a directory, a face on a website, and no real sense of whether they are any good with a child who has gone off reading. We took that part out. Harry and Joe have personally interviewed every coach on the platform, and about thirty-three people apply for every one we say yes to, so by the time a name reaches you it has already been through two people who know what actually gets a child reading.

02

The real block first, not just 'more reading practice'

A child who reads slowly and a child who reads fluently but takes in little are two different problems, and they need two different sorts of help. Some children never fully got the sounds. Some decode every word and lose the meaning halfway down the page. Before anyone starts, Joe works out roughly where your child has come unstuck, so the coach he matches you with is right for that, not just 'a reading tutor' off a list.

03

We start by listening, not selling

Most parents who reach us cannot quite name what is wrong, only that reading is a battle and it did not use to be. That is what the 40-minute call with Joe is for. A proper conversation about the reading age, what your child avoids, what school has said, and what a bedtime book actually looks like right now. From there he puts together a short list of coaches who could genuinely help.

Our tutor is simply amazing with our daughter. He understands her completely and her sessions are helping her with her school work so much. We cannot thank him enough.

This company helped us find a tutor for Geography and my son has excelled so much in just a few months. Our tutor has gone above and beyond, demonstrating incredible patience and encouraging my son to believe in himself. He also manages neurodiversity effectively.

My granddaughter uses the Degree Gap tutoring services across a few subjects. She is not only improving academically but really enjoys the setup and structure too. I would recommend to anyone.

Harry and Joe, co-founders of The Degree Gap

Who runs The Degree Gap

Meet Harry and Joe

We are Harry and Joe, the co-founders, and here is the honest reason this exists. We were both tutored as kids, and we each had two tutors, one who was brilliant and one who just turned up and worked through the book. Same subjects, completely different experience. One of them got Harry genuinely reading and enjoying it, the other you forgot by Tuesday. So when we built The Degree Gap, the whole thing came down to the match. A child who has gone off reading does not need any coach going. They need the one who gets them reading again without it feeling like a telling-off. That is the person Joe goes looking for after your first call.

Things Reading parents ask us

How do I know if my child needs a reading coach?

A few things tend to give it away. Reading aloud that is slow or full of guesses. A reading-age letter from school that came back lower than you hoped. Or a child who used to love stories and now finds every excuse not to open a book. Any of those is a good reason to talk to us, and we will tell you honestly on the call if we do not think a coach is what your child needs.

My child has decided they hate reading. Can that really change?

It is one of the most common reasons families come to us, and yes, it usually can. A child who says they hate reading has often just found it hard for a long time, so avoiding it feels easier than failing at it. A patient coach starts below the point of struggle, finds books that are actually worth finishing, and lets small wins do the rest. We cannot promise a bookworm, but the dread tends to lift.

What does a reading coach actually do in a session?

The first session is mostly listening, hearing your child read and working out where it comes unstuck. After that it depends on what they found, maybe the sounds they never quite got, maybe the meaning slipping past them. Sessions stay light and one-to-one, with reading your child can manage and then a small stretch, so it never tips back into the thing they dread.

Do you do reading sessions in person, or only online?

Everything runs online, through Lessonspace, our shared whiteboard. The coach and your child read off the same screen, and the coach can highlight a word or bring up a new page in a second. Most children settle into it quickly, and plenty concentrate better one-to-one online than in a busy classroom. We do not do in-person.

What age is a reading coach right for?

Mostly primary and lower-secondary, the years where reading is meant to become automatic and school moves on assuming it has. That said, age matters less than where your child actually is with reading. Tell Joe what is going on and he will tell you honestly whether it is a good fit.

Are the consultation and the trial calls really free?

Yes. The 40-minute consultation with Joe is free. The trial calls with the coaches he suggests are free too. You only start paying once you have chosen a coach and weekly sessions begin. No catch, no card details up front.
