From enquiry to first session

What happens after you first get in touch

1

A 40-minute consultation with Joe

When you enquire, Joe calls you back to arrange a time that suits you. The consultation is a proper forty-minute conversation about your child's Geography, the exam board, the predicted grade, and whether the marks are going missing on recall or on the long evaluation answers. From there he starts thinking about which tutors would fit.

2

Free trial calls with two or three tutor matches

Joe sends a shortlist of two or three tutors he thinks could work for your child. Each one offers a free trial call, so you can meet them, watch how they break down a 9-mark question, and see who your child actually clicks with. No commitment afterwards, no card details, no pressure.

3

You pick the tutor that fits, and sessions begin

From the trial calls you choose the tutor who feels right, and weekly sessions begin on Lessonspace, our shared online whiteboard. You pay per session, there are no contracts, and if at any point it is not working, you stop.

Why us

Why the revision is going in and the grade is not moving

We have met every tutor we put in front of you

The worst part of finding a tutor is usually the guesswork. A name off a directory, a graduate profile, and a hope that it lands. We took that part out. Harry and Joe have sat across from every tutor on the platform, and roughly thirty-three apply for every one they say yes to. So by the time a name reaches you, it has already been through two people who know what a Geography examiner rewards, which is rarely more facts and almost always the right facts, put to the exact question.

02

Your child's exact board and paper, not just 'Geography'

AQA, Edexcel and OCR all call it Geography, then set different case studies and mark the long answers in different ways. One board wants a 9-mark judgement. Another builds a whole paper around a decision-making booklet. Learn one board's Nigeria and sit another board's paper, and the detail no longer fits the question in front of you. If you are not sure which board your child sits, Joe works that out with you on the first call, before anything else is decided.

03

We start by reading a real answer, not selling

Most parents who reach us cannot name exactly what is going wrong. The revision is happening, the case studies are on the flashcards, and the marks still sit under where they should. That is what the 40-minute consultation with Joe is for. A proper conversation about the mock that came back low, the 9-mark question that keeps bleeding marks, and whether the problem is recall, applying the detail, or the evaluation at the end. From there he puts together a small shortlist of tutors who can do something about it.

What Degree Gap parents actually say

Real reviews from real Degree Gap families, all verified on Google. One of them names Geography directly. The others name other subjects. What they describe is the same pattern we see in Geography, a child who was stuck, then moving.

★★★★★

This company helped us find a tutor for Geography and my son has excelled so much in just a few months. Our tutor has gone above and beyond, demonstrating incredible patience and encouraging my son to believe in himself. He also manages neurodiversity effectively.

I was really pleased to discover the Degree Gap when my daughter needed help getting the grades she needed for GCSEs. The team offer a really personalised service and I felt really well looked after from the start. There are lots of tutors to choose from and all subjects are catered for, with great flexibility on timings. Highly recommend.

Who runs The Degree Gap

Meet Harry and Joe

We are Harry and Joe, the co-founders of The Degree Gap. We started this because we kept seeing the same thing. Capable students quietly missed in a class of thirty, where the pace and the attention could not match what they needed. So we built one-to-one tutoring around the child, matched on the exam board and on the way they learn, not just on the subject. Between us we have logged more than 5,000 hours of one-to-one teaching, and a firm view on what actually moves a Geography grade, which is turning what a student already half-knows into answers that hit the question.

Things GCSE Geography parents ask us

How do I know if my child actually needs a GCSE Geography tutor?

The clearest sign is effort that is not showing up in the marks. The revision is going in, the case studies are learned, and the mock still comes back lower than it should. Sometimes it is the long questions, the 9-mark answers that never quite reach the top band. Sometimes a bright student just wants to push further than the classroom pace allows. Either is a good reason to get in touch, and we will tell you honestly on the call if we do not think tutoring is the right move.

My child memorises the case studies but still loses marks. Why?

This is the most common thing we hear about Geography, and it is almost never a memory problem. Your child knows Typhoon Haiyan or the Nigeria material cold. What the exam wants is the handful of relevant facts, put to the exact question, then a judgement on top. That is a separate skill from recall, and it is the one a tutor can teach quickly, because it is mostly technique.

Do you match my child's exam board? AQA, Edexcel and OCR feel different.

Yes, and it matters more in Geography than parents expect. The boards set different case studies and mark the extended answers differently, 9 marks on AQA, 8 on Edexcel, and OCR B builds a whole paper around a decision-making booklet. We match your child with a tutor who knows their exact board. If you are not sure which one they sit, Joe will help you work it out on the first call.

Can a tutor help with the fieldwork and skills paper?

Yes. That paper trips a lot of students up because it is not about learned content, it is about applying skills under pressure. Reading an OS map, a six-figure grid reference, pulling data off a graph, working through the pre-release booklet the way the examiner expects. A tutor can rehearse all of it directly, which is hard to do in a full class.

Do you do GCSE Geography in person or just online?

All sessions run through Lessonspace, our shared whiteboard. The tutor can annotate an OS map on screen, mark a 9-mark answer line by line, and build up a case-study diagram with your child watching every step. Most students concentrate better one-to-one online than they do in a class of thirty. We do not do in-person.

Is the consultation and the trial calls really free?

Yes. The 40-minute consultation with Joe is free. The trial calls with the tutors he suggests are free too. You only start paying once you have chosen a tutor and weekly sessions begin. No catch, no card details upfront.
