From enquiry to first session

From your first message to the tutor your child sits with

1

A 40-minute consultation with Joe

When you enquire, Joe calls you back to arrange a time that works for you. The consultation is a proper conversation about what is going on with your child's Psychology, the exam board, the predicted grade and whether the marks are leaking on the essays, the application questions or research methods. From there he starts thinking about which tutors would actually fit.

2

Free trial calls with two or three tutor matches

Joe sends a shortlist of two or three tutors he believes could work for your child, and each one offers a free trial call. You meet them, watch how they mark an evaluation point, and see who your child actually clicks with. No commitment afterwards, no card details and no awkward pressure.

3

You pick the tutor that fits, and sessions begin

From the trial calls you choose the tutor that feels right for your child, and weekly sessions begin on Lessonspace, our shared online whiteboard. You pay per session, there are no contracts, and if at any point it is not working, you stop.

01

We have met every tutor we put in front of you

The hardest part of finding a tutor is usually not knowing who you are getting, a name pulled from a directory or a graduate profile with a nice photo. We changed that part. Harry and Joe have personally interviewed every tutor on the platform, and roughly thirty-three people apply for every one we take on. So by the time a name reaches you, it has already been through two people who know what an A-Level Psychology examiner actually rewards, and it is rarely the essay that only describes the study.

02

Your child's exact paper, not just 'Psychology'

AQA, Edexcel and OCR look like the same subject and they really are not. The research methods weighting differs, the way statistics come up differs, and how the top band is awarded on a 16-marker differs too. If your child is being taught one board and tutored on another, the marks tend to suffer for it. If you are not sure which board your child sits, Joe works that out with you on the first call before anything else is decided.

03

We start by listening, not selling

Most parents who reach us can name the symptom but not the cause. The essays come back with 'more evaluation needed' written in the margin, and nobody at home can say what that actually means in practice. That is what the 40-minute consultation with Joe is for, a proper conversation about the mock that came back lower than hoped, the research methods paper your child dreads and the topics the class moved past too quickly. From there he puts together a small shortlist of tutors who can do something about it.

★★★★★

Our son has been receiving tuition for Psychology A Level. The tutor has provided a solid base of support outside of school lessons and helped him to improve his latest grades.

★★★★★

My tutor is a very intuitive and superb teacher. She listened to my specific concerns and bolstered my confidence in answering questions. She taught me how to think critically and helped me through this highly demanding course. I will happily recommend without a second thought.

My son has been receiving tutor lessons in A Level History and A Level Sociology since the beginning of this year. The tutor has been such a tremendous support, teaching him content as well as exam technique.

Who runs The Degree Gap

Meet Harry and Joe

We are Harry and Joe, the co-founders of The Degree Gap. We started this because we kept seeing the same thing happen. Capable students getting quietly missed in a class of thirty, where the pace and the attention could never match what they actually needed. So we built one-to-one tutoring around the student, matched on the exam board and on the way they learn, not just on the subject. Between us we have more than five thousand hours of one-to-one teaching, and a firm view on what moves an A-Level Psychology grade. It is almost never more content. It is the evaluation and the exam technique a class of thirty runs out of time to drill.

Things A-Level Psychology parents ask us

How do I know if my child actually needs an A-Level Psychology tutor?

The clearest sign is effort that is not showing up in the marks. Essays that read fine at home but come back stuck in the lower band. A quiet dread of the research methods paper. Marks that go up and down with no obvious reason. Sometimes it is simpler, some students just want to push further than the class has time for. Either is a good reason to get in touch, and we will tell you honestly on the call if we do not think tutoring is the right move.

My child knows the studies but keeps losing marks. What is going wrong?

Nine times out of ten it is not the content. It is the AO3 evaluation and applying theory to the novel scenario in the question. A lot of students write everything they know about a study and stop there, which caps the mark however much they have revised. A good tutor shows them how to turn a describe-only answer into an argued one, and how to read the stem so the application marks are not left on the table.

Can a tutor really help with the research methods and statistics part?

Yes, and it is one of the most teachable parts of the whole course. Choosing the right statistical test, reading levels of measurement, working out whether a design is related or unrelated, these follow rules once someone sits down and walks the student through them properly. Most students find research methods far less frightening after a few focused sessions than they did staring at it alone.

Do you match the tutor to my child's exam board?

Always. AQA, Edexcel and OCR mark Psychology differently, and exam board knowledge is part of how we match, not an afterthought. If you are not sure which board your child sits, Joe will help you work it out on the first call before any tutor is suggested.

Do you do A-Level Psychology in person or just online?

All sessions run through Lessonspace, our shared whiteboard. The tutor can mark an essay on screen and walk your child through the evaluation line by line, or build a stats question up together in real time. Most students concentrate better one-to-one online than they do in a class of thirty. We do not do in-person.

Is the consultation and the trial calls really free?

Yes. The 40-minute consultation with Joe is free. The trial calls with the tutors he suggests are free. You only start paying once you have chosen a tutor and weekly sessions begin. No catch, no card details upfront.
