Maths and English open the door, usually at grade 4 or 5, and the AMRC Training Centre's engineering routes lean hard on the Sciences too. A GCSE Maths tutor spends most of the time on the algebra and problem-solving the technical assessments come back to. Get those solid and the rest of the application has room to breathe.
With a diagnostic, not a lecture. The first session works through a recent paper to find where the marks actually go, usually in algebra rearrangement, ratio, or the longer problem-solving questions. From there the plan rebuilds the topic that broke first, and the confidence tends to come back a step ahead of the grade.
Nearly all of them run online, through Lessonspace, a shared whiteboard where the tutor and student work side by side. For a student who's stopped putting their hand up in class, one-to-one online often feels safer than a room of thirty. There's no audience, and no cost to asking the same question twice.
