How it is examined

How AQA GCSE Maths is examined, paper by paper

AQA (spec 8300) is the most-sat GCSE Maths board in the country. Three papers, one without a calculator and two with, each worth 80 marks and each counting equally. Here is what your child is really being asked to do.

Paper 1: Non-calculator

1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, and always the first paper your child sits. No calculator, so arithmetic, fractions and surds have to be secure before anything else.

Paper 2: Calculator

1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks. This is often where the longer statistics, ratio and proportion questions land, and where a tidy calculator method saves the minutes students usually run short on.

Paper 3: Calculator

1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks. The final paper carries the same weight as the other two, so none of them is the easy one. All three count equally toward the grade.

Tiers and the formula sheet

Foundation covers grades 1 to 5, Higher covers 4 to 9. From 2025 AQA provides a formula sheet, so the work shifts from memorising formulae to knowing which one to reach for and when.

Where the marks are

What an AQA tutor drills that the classroom cannot

01

Knowing which formula the question wants

Since 2025 AQA provides a formula sheet in the exam, so the job is no longer memorising formulae, it is spotting which one a question is quietly asking for and using it cleanly under time. A tutor drills that recognition until it is automatic.

02

Pacing an evenly spread paper

AQA spreads difficulty across the paper rather than saving the hard marks for the end. Slow down too much on the early questions and the marks get left behind late. Timed practice, marked the way AQA marks, fixes the pacing.

03

The method marks in multi-step questions

Whether your child is securing a Foundation grade or reaching into the top of Higher, AQA gives marks for the working, not just the final answer. We drill writing every step so nothing is thrown away on the longer questions.

From enquiry to first session

From your first message to the first AQA session

01

A 40-minute consultation with Joe

When you enquire, Joe calls you back within one working day. The first thing he confirms is that your child sits AQA, because tutoring the wrong board's questions quietly costs marks. Then it is a proper conversation about the predicted grade, the tier and the topics that slipped.

02

Free trial calls with two or three tutors

Joe sends a shortlist of tutors who know the AQA 8300 spec, and each offers a free trial call. Your child meets them, sees how they explain an AQA question, and finds who they click with. No card details, no pressure.

03

You pick the tutor that fits

You choose the one who felt right, and weekly sessions begin on Lessonspace, our shared online whiteboard. You pay per session, there are no contracts, and if at any point it is not working, you stop.

★★★★★

My daughter was struggling with confidence in Maths GCSE and we decided to get a tutor. We were given a selection of tutors to choose from and told that if it did not feel like a good match we could try others. Our tutor was a complete star, listened, made it simple, set good homework and gave my daughter her confidence back. Highly recommend.

AQA GCSE Maths questions parents ask

How do I know if my child sits AQA for GCSE Maths?

It is on the exam timetable and at the top of any past paper the school sends home, shown as AQA, spec code 8300. If you are not sure, Joe will confirm it on the first call before matching anyone, because tutoring the wrong board's questions quietly costs marks.

Foundation or Higher tier, which should my child sit?

Foundation caps at grade 5, Higher runs 4 to 9. The school usually decides from mocks, but it is not always final. A tutor can give you an honest view on whether your child is better protecting a strong Foundation grade or pushing for the Higher paper, and we talk that through with you.

AQA gives a formula sheet now, so does my child still need a tutor?

The formula sheet, new from 2025, takes away some memorising, not the hard part. Marks are won by knowing which formula a question is quietly asking for and using it under time. That recognition is exactly what a tutor drills.

Do your tutors actually know the AQA 8300 spec?

Yes. When Joe matches a tutor he checks board knowledge, not just Maths. AQA, Edexcel and OCR mark differently and reward the top band differently, so we put your child with someone who knows the AQA papers.

Is GCSE Maths tutoring online or in person?

Every session runs on Lessonspace, our shared online whiteboard, so the tutor can work through an AQA past paper on screen and mark it line by line. Most students focus better one-to-one online than in a class of thirty. We do not do in-person.

How much does an AQA GCSE Maths tutor cost?

Sessions start from £37 an hour. The exact rate depends on the tutor and is agreed with you before anything is booked. You pay per session, there are no contracts, and the consultation and trial calls are free.
