GCSE Maths in Wigan tends to split two ways. Some Year 11s need a confident grade 5 that isn't wobbling by results day; others are chasing the 7 that A-Level Maths at Winstanley quietly expects. The marks leak in the same few places either way: the algebraic manipulation buried inside a multi-mark question, the wordy problem-solving at the back of the calculator paper, and further down, a Year 8 fractions or negatives method that never fully set. It usually isn't effort. It's a handful of question styles and one or two foundations that slipped.

From lesson two the plan targets whichever it is: drilling the algebra and the multi-step calculator questions for the student near the top, rebuilding the earlier method for the one catching up. For a Winstanley or St John Rigby A-Level place, where the Maths and Science routes ask for a strong grade in the subject, that's the work that earns the offer.

Winstanley College and St John Rigby College both set their own subject requirements, and for A-Level Maths that usually means a grade 7, with Further Maths often asking for an 8. Wigan and Leigh College publishes its own thresholds for the Level 3 routes. From a current grade 5 or 6, that gap is typically a 12 to 16 week piece of work: the algebra and problem-solving question styles first, then the top-band stretch. We confirm the exact target in the first call.
Both, because they are weighted equally and decide the grade together. The non-calculator paper rewards arithmetic fluency and clean algebraic manipulation; the calculator papers reward accuracy on multi-step, wordy problems, which is where most Wigan students we see lose marks at the back end. The first-session diagnostic marks a recent paper of each to find which one is bleeding more, and the early lessons target that paper first.
Higher tier caps at grade 9 and floors at 4, foundation caps at 5. If a student is sitting at a borderline 5 or 6 in Year 10 mocks, higher tier is usually right but needs targeted preparation on the top-of-paper questions. At a secure 3 or 4, foundation lowers the risk of a scramble. The honest call comes from a Year 10 diagnostic, and we will tell you plainly which tier we think fits.
Only around 3% of applicants make it onto the platform. Every tutor goes through a written application, a subject-knowledge check and a founder-led interview that tests how clearly they explain a method under pressure, because knowing Maths and teaching it are different skills. Most have at least two years of one-to-one experience and come from top Russell Group universities. If a match doesn't feel right, we swap without friction.
