GCSE TUTORING · MANCHESTER
Most Manchester students who struggle with GCSE Science are not short on revision. They know the content and still lose marks on the six-mark explanations, the required practicals and the maths tucked inside Physics. Our Manchester GCSE Science tutors work on turning what a student knows into what the mark scheme rewards.
WHO WE ARE
The Degree Gap is a UK-based company that knows education inside out. Outside of tutoring, we run webinars for thousands of parents, speak at schools about GCSE and A-Level preparation, and have spent years listening to the same worries you're probably about to bring to us. We find you tutors with the grades but also the compassion and ability to listen to your child's worries.
That is what got us voted GCSE Tutoring Specialists of the Year at the 2026 Prestige Awards and why we have over 100 5 star reviews.

With GCSE Science in Manchester, the content is rarely the issue. Applying it under exam conditions is. The long-answer questions, the six and nine-markers, want a structured chain of reasoning that a revision guide never teaches. The required practicals get tested in ways students do not expect. Physics hides its difficulty in the maths, a rearranged equation or a unit conversion that a strong student still fumbles. And Chemistry calculations unravel against the clock. The city's spread shows here too: a steady 4 or 5 in Combined Science is the goal for some, the Triple 6s and 7s a Science A-Level wants for others.
The tutor starts by marking a recent paper across all three sciences to see whether the marks are going on recall, on the long-answer structure, or on the maths. From there it is specialist work: a Biology, Chemistry or Physics tutor for whichever subject leaks most, drilling the practicals and extended answers until they hold. For a Science A-Level route at Xaverian or Loreto, or a technical apprenticeship with an employer like BNY Mellon or the Manchester Airport Group where the Sciences carry weight, that is what turns a pass into a place.
Schools we can help support students from: Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Sale Grammar School, Whalley Range 11-18 High School, Manchester Academy and Xaverian College.
USUALLY MATCHED WITHIN 24 HOURS
Most Manchester families are matched within 24 hours, and for Science we can match a single-subject specialist where one subject is the problem.
Tell us if it is Combined or Triple Science, which of the three sciences is causing the most trouble, the year group and school, the exam board, and the grade you are aiming at.
Within 24 hours you get two or three vetted Science tutors. When the marks are going in one subject, we match a Biology, Chemistry or Physics specialist for it rather than spreading one tutor thin. Free 15-minute video meeting first.
Weekly one-to-one on Lessonspace, our shared whiteboard, building up diagrams and working practicals and six-mark answers step by step. A second weekly hour is common in the run-up to mocks. From £37/hr, cancel any time.

Xaverian, Loreto and Connell usually ask for a grade 6 in the subject for A-Level Sciences, and a 6 in Maths often sits alongside Chemistry and Physics. Triple Science students tend to arrive better prepared, but a Combined Science 5 can quietly limit which Science A-Levels are open. From a 5 to the 6 or 7 a route wants is typically a term's work on the long-answer and calculation marks. We confirm the exact requirement on the first call.
Higher tier reaches the top grades but floors around a 4, foundation caps near a 5. For Combined Science the tiers are set per subject, so a Manchester student can sit higher in Biology and foundation elsewhere if that fits. If a student is hovering at a borderline 4 or 5 in Year 10 mocks, higher tier is usually right but needs targeted work on the six-mark questions and the maths. The honest call comes from a Year 10 diagnostic, and we will tell you plainly which tier fits.
It depends where the marks are going. For a student who is broadly fine and wants coordination, one strong Combined Science tutor works well, and a Maths and Physics specialist often adds an edge on the calculation-heavy topics. But when one subject is clearly the weak spot, we match a specialist for it, a Biology, Chemistry or Physics tutor who knows that spec's practicals and long-answer questions, rather than stretching one tutor across all three.
Yes, and we ask about learning differences when we match, so the tutor is chosen with that in mind. Many tutors in the network work regularly with neurodivergent students, and Lessonspace's shared whiteboard suits Science well: diagrams built up in stages, explanations chunked, practicals scaffolded visually rather than delivered as a wall of text. Mention it on the consultation call and we match accordingly.
There is a free 15-minute video meeting with the recommended tutor before any paid session, so your child meets them first. If the first session does not feel right, we swap within 24 hours at no charge. Because only around 3% of applicants make it onto the platform, there is real depth to match from, including a specialist for whichever of the three sciences is the problem.
